The students have individual lessons but also play together in ensembles. This is excellent training and fun for them. There are concerts (usually three a year) which include solo and group playing.
I teach using the Suzuki method for young students but also draw ideas and repetoire from many sources. In the early years, the Suzuki method works very well, especially for violin and viola students. The students listen at home to a cd of the music that they will be playing. This means that they can learn their first pieces without having to learn music reading at the same time. On violin and viola this is especially helpful because a beginner has so much to think about while trying to hold the instrument and bow properly, trying to use the bow properly, trying to use the fingers properly, etc. Note reading is introduced gradually as the student gets the basics of playing sorted out. As the students get older, I branch out more from the Suzuki repetoire.
This year I plan to have my students do a humorous concert. Many of the students are already looking forward to it.
Please phone or email me if you have questions.
